Youth Cricket Age Groups in the USA
There is no single nationwide age-group structure used by every youth cricket league, academy and tournament in the United States. Different organizers run different divisions.
Across the competitions we reviewed for the 2026 season, U11, U13 and U15 appear most frequently. Older divisions vary more: we found U16, U17, U18 and U19 all in current use, depending on the organizer.
Because of that, an age-group label on its own does not tell you whether your child is eligible. Always check the rules published by the specific competition.

Every example below comes from a competition we verified during the 2026 season. This is what we have seen in use, not a national standard.

What each label means in practice
These notes describe where we found each division in use. They do not assign universal ages, because eligibility belongs to the organizer.
U11
One of the most widely used junior divisions. We found it at AMLCA, Washington Youth Cricket League, Junior League Cricket in North Carolina and SCYCA in Southern California.
U12
Less common. The Labor Day Youth Tournament run by Philadelphia Warhawks uses U12 rather than U11 or U13.
U13
Widely used, including in USA Cricket’s Junior Pathway competitions and in most of the regional leagues we reviewed.
U15
Also widely used, and the senior age group in USA Cricket’s Junior Pathway competitions during the 2026 season.
U16
Used by SCYCA, by the Labor Day Youth Tournament, and as the youngest squad group in the US Junior League.
U17
Used by Washington Youth Cricket League as its senior youth division.
U18
Used by AMLCA as its senior youth division. This is a clear example of variation: two national-scale tournaments in the same season, one running U17 and the other U18.
U19
The age group used at national and international level, including USA Cricket’s National Championship and ICC Under-19 competition.
How age cutoffs actually work
This is the part that catches families out. A division called U15 does not simply mean “children aged 15”. Competitions define eligibility in their own rules, and those rules commonly use a birth-date window rather than an age.
We were not able to find published cutoff rules for most of the regional U.S. leagues we reviewed. Where rules are not published, ask the organizer directly before registering.
WORKED EXAMPLE — USA CRICKET U19 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, 2025
For its 2025 U19 Men’s National Championship, USA Cricket published two limits: players had to be born on or after 1 September 2006 and on or before 31 August 2010.
That is a four-year birth-date window, not a single age. A squad selected under it could contain players who were 15, 16, 17 or 18 at the time. These were the 2025 rules. We have not verified the equivalent 2026 window, so treat this as an illustration of how eligibility is written, not as the current rule.
ICC UNDER-19 ELIGIBILITY
The ICC’s Player Eligibility Regulations set age eligibility for its Under-19 events by reference to a fixed date before the tournament. For the Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup held in January 2026, players had to be under 19 on 31 August 2025.
The ICC also applies a minimum age of 15 for all international cricket, including Under-19 matches, unless it grants a specific exception.
Why competitions use different divisions
Here is the variation we recorded during the 2026 season. We do not know why each organizer chose the divisions it did, and we are not going to guess.

The US Junior League runs a U23 division, which sits outside youth cricket as most families would understand it.
When can my child start cricket?
There is no national minimum starting age. Programs set their own entry ages, and they differ widely.
Among the Texas programs in our directory, for example, one takes children from age 5, another from 7, and another from 8. Several run coaching for beginners well below the youngest competitive division, so a child can be learning the game a year or two before entering U11 cricket.
The practical answer: find a program near you and ask what age they start, and whether they run beginner sessions separately from competitive teams. Our directory of youth cricket programs by state lists what each one publishes.
Girls cricket and age groups
We found no evidence of a separate national age-group structure for girls in the United States. The ICC’s eligibility regulations are written to apply to players of either sex.
That does not mean every competition treats girls’ and boys’ divisions identically. Some programs run mixed age-group cricket at younger ages, some run girls-only sessions, and published girls’ competition calendars are harder to find than boys’. Check the specific competition or program rather than assuming.

From local cricket to higher-level competition
Young players in the United States can compete at several different levels. These are levels, not a guaranteed ladder.
Academy and club programs. Coaching, training and in some cases internal teams. This is where most players start.
Local and regional leagues and tournaments. Competitions such as those listed above, run by independent organizers.
National pathway and championship opportunities. USA Cricket runs its own junior competitions and national championships with their own eligibility rules.
International Under-19 cricket. A small number of selected, eligible players represent the United States in ICC Under-19 competition.
Participation at one level does not guarantee progression to another. Most independent leagues, academies and tournaments are not sanctioned by USA Cricket, and joining a program does not create a route to national selection.
Before you register
Worth confirming in writing before you pay an entry fee.
✓Which exact division is my child entering? U16, U17 and U18 all exist in current U.S. youth cricket and they are not interchangeable.
✓What is the birth-date cutoff? Ask for the actual dates, not the age. A four-year window is normal at U19 level.
✓Which season or year do these rules apply to? Eligibility windows move every season. A rule you read last year may not be this year’s.
✓Is proof of age required? Many competitions ask for a birth certificate or passport at registration or on match day.
✓Is there a minimum age as well as a maximum? Some competitions set both. The ICC, for instance, applies a minimum age of 15 at Under-19 international level.
✓Are the rules different for this particular tournament? An organizer running several events may not use the same eligibility for all of them.
✓Who do I ask if it is unclear? Get the answer from the organizer or league administrator, in writing, before entering.
