If you have a daughter who wants to play cricket in the United States, the honest answer is that the ceiling is higher than it has ever been and the floor is still patchy. Both halves of that sentence matter, so here is what exists, what does not, and what to watch.
The ceiling: an Olympic place is genuinely in reach
Cricket returns to the Olympic Games at the Pomona Fairplex from 12 to 29 July 2028, with a six-team women’s T20 competition alongside the men’s. Squads are capped at fifteen players, and athletes must be at least 15 years old at squad submission or the first match. A girl who is 13 or 14 right now is inside that window.
The USA is eligible for a host-nation quota place in the women’s event, but it is conditional: the national team has to appear in the top 15 of the ICC women’s T20I rankings at some point before the cutoff of 1 March 2027. That is not settled, and anyone telling you the USA women are already in is ahead of the facts. Australia, Great Britain, India and South Africa have secured their places through the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. The sixth spot goes to the winner of a new ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027, with date and venue still unannounced.
The national structure that does exist
USA Cricket runs a Women and Girls selection committee and has held Women’s Senior and Under-19 National Championships organized by regional conference, with squads drawn from the Bay Area, Seattle, Southern California, Dallas and elsewhere. There is a women’s U19 national side; it played at the inaugural ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa in January 2023, captained by Anika Kolan. USA Cricket has also operated a women’s domestic pathway program with open registration windows.
So the representative ladder is real. What is harder to find is a published, current-season national calendar for girls age-group cricket in the way you can look up a boys U19 championship. If you are planning around it, verify dates directly with USA Cricket rather than trusting a secondhand listing.
Where girls actually play week to week
Mostly in mixed academy programs, and that works better than people expect at younger ages. Chicago Youth Cricket Academy explicitly welcomes girls and boys from 8 to 18. Southern California Youth Cricket Academy trains ages 6 to 19 across skill levels. Atlanta Cricket League’s summer kids program is open to boys and girls from 6 to 15. Montgomery County Recreation in Maryland runs its year-round youth academy for both.
Dedicated girls programs are rarer but they exist. California Cricket Academy says it is the only academy with a girls’ team that tours the UK annually, and a separate California Cricket Girls club also operates in the state. United Cricket League runs soft-ball cricket for girls and women aged 12 and up, which is a low-barrier entry point if there is no hard-ball option nearby.
The two real obstacles
The first is critical mass. A mixed U12 session is fine; a mixed U16 session where one girl is the only girl is a retention problem, and it is the main reason players drop out around 13 or 14. If your local club has two or three girls, the useful move is to get them into the same session rather than spread across three.
The second is school sport. Very few state athletic associations sanction cricket at all, so there is no varsity route and no Title IX pressure creating girls’ teams the way there is in soccer or volleyball. Everything happens in clubs. That is not going to change quickly.
What to do with this
If your daughter is under 12, join the nearest mixed program and do not overthink it. If she is 13 or older and enjoying it, start asking clubs directly about girls’ squads, regional conference trials and the USA Cricket women’s pathway, because that is where the ladder starts and nobody will volunteer the information. And if you run a girls’ program anywhere in the country, list it, because right now families cannot find you.
A note on accuracy: girls cricket is the area of American youth cricket with the least published, current information. Confirmed items above are dated. Where a program’s current-season details were not published, we have said so rather than guessed. If you have corrections or 2026-27 dates, send them and we will update this post.
