How to Get Your Kid Started in Cricket in America: A Parent’s Guide for 2026

How to Get Your Kid Started in Cricket in America: A Parent’s Guide for 2026

The hardest part of youth cricket in America isn’t the sport. It’s finding out where it happens. There is no school sign-up sheet, no county rec flyer in most towns, and no obvious front door. So here is the practical version, with no assumptions about whether you played yourself.

Start with age, not ability

Almost every American youth program sorts by age band rather than skill: U8, U10, U12, U13, U15, U17, U19. Beginners are normal at every one of those bands. Southern California Youth Cricket Academy, founded in Orange County in 2014, takes players from ages 6 to 19, skilled or brand new. Chicago Youth Cricket Academy welcomes boys and girls from 8 to 18. Montgomery County Recreation in Maryland runs a year-round academy for ages 6 to 15 through the county parks system, which means you can find it the same way you would find a swim class.

If your child is 12 and has never held a bat, they are not late. Most kids in these programs started within the last two years.

What it actually costs

Generally less than comparable travel sports. A typical beginner block runs over several weekends across a season, and many programs include equipment, offer sibling discounts, or charge a one-time membership on top of session costs. Fees vary widely by program, city and season, so check the current figure directly with the academy — every program in our coaching directory links to its own site.

You also do not need to buy gear on day one. Beginner programs generally supply bats and use modified balls, tennis or hard tennis rather than a full leather ball, specifically so a nine-year-old is not facing something dangerous. Ask before you spend anything. Many clubs will tell you to wait a season.

Two different things called “academy”

This trips up new parents. Some academies are weekend introductions run largely by volunteers. Others are high-performance setups with certified coaches, strength work, and travel squads that fly to national tournaments. Both are useful. They answer different questions.

Chicago Youth Cricket Academy runs year-round skill sessions and also fields competitive travel teams at U11, U13, U15 and U17 that play tournaments around the country. California Cricket Academy, founded in 2003, says it has trained more than 3,000 players and that over 100 have gone on to represent the USA at senior, U19 or U15 level. If your kid catches the bug, that second tier exists. You do not have to choose it in year one.

How to find a club near you

Youth clubs are registered in most states with any cricket presence, including Arizona, Washington, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, New Jersey, Texas and more. There is no single reliable national list, which is why we are building one state by state on our coaching directory.

Beyond that, three approaches work. Search your metro name plus “youth cricket academy.” Check your county parks and recreation catalog, because cricket has quietly appeared in several. And ask at any adult league ground on a weekend. Adult clubs almost always know who runs the kids’ program, and they are usually delighted to be asked.

What to expect in the first month

Sessions typically run 90 minutes to two and a half hours on a weekend morning. Expect drills split across batting, bowling and fielding, then a modified game where every child gets a turn with bat and ball. Good programs rotate deliberately so nobody stands in the outfield for an hour.

What surprises most parents is the social side. These clubs are often the center of a local community, and the sideline conversation turns out to be half the reason families keep showing up.

Where it can lead

Worth knowing, even if it is far off. There is a national U19 side that played at the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup in January 2026. College cricket now has organized national championships. Minor League and Major League Cricket put professional teams within driving distance of a growing number of cities. And cricket returns to the Olympic Games at the Pomona Fairplex in July 2028, with a minimum athlete age of 15, which puts today’s middle schoolers inside the window.

None of that needs to matter on the first Saturday. Find a session, borrow a bat, see if they like it.
