Cricket has almost no formal place in American high schools. Very few state athletic associations sanction it, so a talented sixteen-year-old usually plays for a club on weekends and represents nothing at all during the school week. Texas is one of the places quietly doing something about that.
The Texas Scholastic Cricket Board describes itself as the first student-led high school cricket federation in the state. Students do not simply play in it. They run team operations, coordinate the league, handle media and officiate matches. Look at the scorecards from this season and the umpires are named Tanay Vemula, Arihaan Saxena and Mokshith Muthineni. Students, officiating students.
A season built around school names
The Dallas Regionals ran across 23 match days from February 16 to June 9, 2026, at Lakewood Cricket Ground and Independence Cricket Ground. The team sheet reads like a North Texas school district roll call: Prosper Eagles, Rock Hill Bluehawks, Liberty Redhawks, Lebanon Trail Challengers, Frisco Fury, Heritage Coyotes, Ranchview Wolves, Westwood Warriors and Round Rock Dragons.
That matters more than it might sound. These are not club sides with sponsor names. They are schools, playing under school colors, in a competition organized by the students who attend them.
June: Rock Hill get the better of Prosper
The Season 1 final on June 9 was one-sided. Prosper Eagles were bowled out for 60 in 14.5 overs. Rock Hill Bluehawks knocked off the runs for the loss of four wickets inside 13 overs. A comfortable win, and Rock Hill went into the summer as the team to beat.
July: the rematch, and a Super Over
The State Tournament followed on July 25 and 26 at Denton Cricket Ground, cut to 15 overs a side.
In the semi-finals, Prosper Eagles chased 110 against Westwood Warriors and got there in 11.2 overs with seven wickets standing. Rock Hill Bluehawks beat Round Rock Dragons by six wickets, holding them to 76 and passing it in 13 overs. The two sides from the June final had found their way back to each other.
The final, on the Sunday afternoon, was as close as cricket gets. Prosper Eagles posted 109 for 5 from their 15 overs. Rock Hill Bluehawks finished on 109 for 3 from theirs. Tied.
Prosper Eagles won the Super Over, and with it the 2026 Texas state title — six weeks after being bowled out for 60 by the same opponent.
Round Rock Dragons took third place, beating Westwood Warriors by three wickets.
Why this is worth paying attention to
Every conversation about youth cricket in America eventually reaches the same gap. Clubs and academies do the work. Schools mostly do not. That means the sport competes for a teenager’s time without the thing that makes American high school sport stick: representing the place you actually go every day.
A tied state final decided by a Super Over, played between two schools twenty minutes apart in Collin County, is a small answer to that. It is also the kind of result that gets talked about in a school hallway on Monday morning, which is precisely the point.
