Wichita State Cricket: A Kansas Campus and a Place to Keep Playing

A place to play can change what college cricket feels like. At Wichita State University in Kansas, university reports trace a club’s move closer to campus and a season that brought two league titles.

For a student building a college shortlist, there is a practical story here: a university-listed cricket club, a playing location to investigate and an academic program built around opportunities to apply what students learn. The useful question is how those pieces could fit into the student’s own life.

What we checked: Wichita State’s sport-club directory, its handbook updated in June 2026 and the 2026–27 academic catalog. Field and competition details below come from university reports published in 2024 and 2025. We did not verify a current cricket practice timetable, trial date or 2026–27 competition calendar.

Start with the club Wichita State actually lists

The university’s Campus Recreation directory lists Cricket, names Sai Karthik Garnepudi as its contact and publishes cricketclub@wichita.edu. It links to the club’s ShockerSync page.

That is a useful official route for inquiries. Ask the listed contact to confirm the current officers, how new students make contact and what is happening in the term you intend to join. A directory listing does not, by itself, confirm that registration is open today.

Students looking for competitive cricket should ask about the level and volume of play. Beginners and those who simply want a regular game should ask what participation looks like outside the selected match squad.

Membership and match selection are different questions

Wichita State’s Sport Club Handbook, marked updated June 2, 2026, describes clubs as student-organized and identifies instructional, recreational and competitive forms of participation.

It also makes a distinction worth understanding: clubs may select a travel or competition team that does not include every member. Its general membership policy prohibits restrictions based on characteristics including sex, national origin, age and ability.

Those are program-wide policies. They do not establish that every visitor is eligible, that cricket currently offers every participation option, or that competition organizers have identical rules. Ask how the club applies the policy, what membership requirements apply to you and how match squads are chosen. Women interested in playing should ask directly about current opportunities and arrangements.

A field closer to campus

In May 2024, Wichita State reported a new cricket field project at Dr. Glen Dey Park, about two miles from campus. Its account described how travel to the previous location had made getting players together more difficult.

A December 2025 university report subsequently described the club practicing and playing home matches at Glen Dey Park.

For a prospective student, the lesson is practical: ask about the journey to cricket, not just the name of the ground. Confirm the current playing location, transportation and access before visiting. A past report about a field is not a standing invitation to use it.

What the 2025 titles tell us

That December 2025 report credited Wichita State with winning its league’s 35-over and T20 titles during that year. It also described a club with a substantial graduate-student presence and a community built around the game.

This is historical evidence of organized cricket in two formats. We have not verified a 2026 title or the next tournament calendar. An incoming undergraduate should ask about opportunities specifically available to new undergraduates, rather than assuming the past team’s composition or results describe their own first season.

Look at the degree and the experience around it

Wichita State’s 2026–27 undergraduate catalog lists programs across areas including aerospace engineering, computer science, business and the arts. Begin with the particular degree that interests you and examine its requirements.

The university’s applied-learning information describes opportunities such as research, internships, cooperative education and practical placements. These provide useful questions for an academic adviser: which experiences are part of your program, when do they take place and how would they affect your weekly commitments?

These are opportunities to investigate, rather than guaranteed placements or cricket-specific arrangements. A student pursuing ambitious cricket goals may prioritize training and match exposure. Another may want cricket as a social connection alongside their degree. Understanding the actual timetable helps both students make an informed choice.

Six questions for the current club

  • Joining: Can a new undergraduate join this term, and what registration or other requirements apply?
  • First session: When and where should a newcomer attend, and what equipment should they bring?
  • Playing options: What is currently available for beginners, recreational players and women?
  • Selection: How are match and travel squads chosen, and which competition eligibility rules apply?
  • Commitment: What training, match-day and travel time should a player expect?
  • Academic conflicts: How should players communicate when classes, placements or exams overlap with cricket?

The published Sport Clubs Schedule did not show a cricket practice slot when we checked. That leaves the timetable unconfirmed; it does not establish that the club has stopped playing. Confirm arrangements with the club before attending.
